Representing Events in Japanese Complex Predicates

چکیده

This paper presents an event semantics-based investigation of Japanese complex predicates of the form V1+V2, to clarify their syntactic and semantic constitution. The Japanese V1+V2 formation primarily exploits the aspectual modification of a core event; of particular interest here are complex predicates composed of intentional active verbs with te-form + the existential verb a-ru; this complex pattern is known to be ambiguous between what is usually termed a ‘resultative’ and a ‘preparative’ reading. One major problem of the “V-te-a-ru” construction is retrieving the semantic relation linking their components, which is (partially) implicit on the surface. To date, no uniform analysis has been developed to formally account for these facts. The main goal of this study was to develop a uniform analysis of their meaning representations, using Davidson’s (1967) event semantics as a reference model. Basic data revealed some interesting findings, indicating some asymmetry in event structure. This could help identify the semantic relations of components and clarify the semantic representation of a given syntactic paradigm.

The Interlanguage of Persian Learners of Italian: a Focus on Complex Predicates

This paper aims at investigating the acquisition of Italian complex predicates by native speakers of Persian. Complex predication is not as pervasive a phenomenon in Italian as it is in Persian. Yet Italian native speakers use complex predicates productively; spontaneous data show that Persian learners of Italian seem to be perfectly aware of Italian complex predicates and use this familiar fea...

Toward a Unified Analysis of the Scope Interpretation of Complex Predicates in Japanese: Evidence from the Light Verb Construction

In this paper, I first make an observation that there is a certain parallelism in the scope interpretation possibilities of adverbs and quantifiers with respect to different types complex predicates in Japanese, drawing on a comparison of the light verb construction and the causative construction. I will then argue that previous approaches to complex predicates in Japanese in the lexicalist tra...

Multiple Representation of Japanese Complex Predicates : A Lexicalist Analysis of Subject and Object Honorific Forms

Lexicalist approaches to syntax can benefit from multidimensionality of representation as exhibited by Ailohanan(1997). Subject and object honorific forms in Japanese are shown to be complex predicates with its second component grammaticalized and triggering argument-sharing of the two components of the predicate. Multidimensional representation makes it possible to account for the Gricean infe...

Adjunction, Phases, and Complex Predicates in Japanese

I provide a unified account of a constraint on adjunction observed in three complex predicate constructions in Japanese: (i) restructuring motion verb constructions, (ii) light verb constructions, (iii) infinitives with wasure‘forget’. It is shown that adjunction (i.e. adverbial modification, adjectival modification, and quantifier raising) in the lower projections are impossible in these const...
